Area(s) of Atlantic Study: New England & New York (U.S), broader Americas
Academic Background
Addison is a PhD student at Fordham University, located in New York City. She received her MA in American and Digital History from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Addison’s research broadly centers on women’s reproduction, recreation, and place-making with an emphasis on environmental history. Her current project focuses on women’s anti-nuclear activism in the twentieth century, primarily on how American feminists aligned themselves with the broader anti-nuclear movement, including both Native American and Mexican women’s activism. Broadly, Addison is interested in how gender and the body impact people’s relationships to the natural and built environment.
Research Interests
Beyond her doctoral project, Addison is interested in research relating to:
Environmental History
Human & non-human animal interactions
Lesbian History
Maternalism
Media Studies
Sexuality & the Body
Public History
Aside from academic endeavors, Addison also runs an Instagram archive (@lesbianlesiure) documenting lesbian recreation. During times of extreme homophobia and conservative backlash, lesbian women often used joy as a form of resistance, remaining prominent mobilizers in the larger women’s movement by challenging patriarchal, heteronormative standards.
Why Written in the Waves?
“WIW provides a space for young woman scholars like myself to jump out of their comfort zones and enter into a field that has been dominated by men, both as historians and historical actors. I am excited to bring a feminist lens to the Atlantic world, exploring how women shaped the world around them as social, economic, and political actors. I want to contribute to WIW by centring women and non-human actors in environmental and Atlantic histories, particularly spotlighting stories of Indigenous women’s environmental knowledge.”
