Area(s) of Atlantic Study: England, Great Britain
Academic Background
Caliesha is a History PhD Candidate at McMaster University. She earned her MA in History from McMaster and her BA in History & Media Studies from Trent University. Her SSHRC-funded dissertation explores perceptions and representations of the apocalypse in late Elizabethan England. Specifically, she is interested in how moments of environmental crisis were interpreted as apocalyptic signs. This research spotlights ordinary people in the decades following the Reformation, exploring how they grappled with, feared, and found comfort in a popular and sensory-driven belief in the impending last days. Additionally, Caliesha's other project examines apocalyptic symbolism and political prophecy within the Venetian context. She has also worked as a sessional lecturer at McMaster University, teaching the history of the British Empire.
Research Interests
Beyond her doctoral research, Caliesha is interested in the following areas of study:
Religious History
History of Emotions
Printing History
Early Modern & Reformation History
Prophecy
Why Written in the Waves?
Sixteenth-century scholars are increasingly highlighting the importance of mobility and cross-border circulation. This awareness of movement—whether across physical territories or confessional boundaries—supports scholarship that reflects the dynamic and ever-shifting nature of contemporary experiences. Written in the Waves is built on these principles. The project provides a platform for exchange that mirrors the subjects many of us study. Caliesha values the significance of this exchange and looks forward to further engaging with the Atlantic community through Written in the Waves.
